She was scared to stop because there were a couple of semis close behind her and it’s a two lane highway at that point with no shoulder. The SUV spun off the road on impact, completely trashed, and she didn’t even have time to slow down - her car had bumped and sloshed over the remains of the deer. She said she had been following an SUV that hit a huge deer standing in the right hand lane a few miles back. Her car looked like someone had thrown a bucket of blood at it. I almost believed I’d dreamed it except a few minutes after later another car pulled up and a woman got out, cursing. I was sure I must have made contact, I didn’t see how I could have avoided it so i pulled into the next rest station a few miles down the road, parked under one of the big lights, got out and looked all around the car for damage - none. All before my lower teeth could touch my upper lip to get out the “F” in FFFFUUUCCKKK! Then I was by him and the car was going straight ahead in the right hand lane like nothing had happened. The car spun sideways and everything slowed down - as I swung by the deer I saw the dawning light of comprehension in his eye that something unusual was happening. At the very last moment though, like a fool, I jerked the wheel left and then right again. I knew there was no way to avoid a collision and was almost pleased, like - oh, now I’ll find out what it’s like - it was the strangest feeling. My headlights must have just gone over him until the last moment when I caught sight of him - I could actually see the tufts of his light winter underfur peeking out of his dark gray coat - that’s how close I was. I was (also stupidly) doing about 85 miles per hour, the buck was at the very lowest spot of a long gradual downslope. I had always practiced in my head what to do if a deer impact was imminent - i’ve been told time and again to brake, but with control and hold a steady course, don’t try to turn to avoid the collision - I’ve even practiced the move on back roads (I learned to drive In my 30s as I’ve always lived in NYC, so I’m much more inexperienced than most people and try to anticipate how I should react in certain situations to make up for it.) And, of course, when the time came I stupidly did exactly the opposite of what I’d planned. The leased BMW almost certainly saved my life when I encountered a big old buck with enormous antlers standing directly across the right lane of the NY State Thruway late one night. The only issue I’ve ever experienced is that it sometimes tells me one of the tires is low when it is really cold outside. I keep thinking maybe I should buy another one, but there’s nothing wrong with the one I have. It was a great car so I decided to buy a new one when the lease was up. It’s taken a tumble as well without issue. I’ve stuffed it to the brim and used the compression straps to their full effect without issue. I also bought an 86 liter pack of theirs and have put ~400 miles on it with overnight backpacking trips. I sent it to osprey and they fixed it no issue. Nothing broke but the slider that attaches the chest strap came undone. When I went to bed in somewhere with the pack I realized that it was caught but I was impatient and just pulled the pack as hard as I could. It didn’t crush the buckle and I added two more rows on top. I was stacking cinder blocks in a vehicle and my chest strap buckle got in between two cinder block faces when I dropped the top one. It’s seen a lot of use and I’ve only had one thing fail and it was my own fault. I’ve had a nebula as my EDC pack for 4 years in college and now multiple more years in my professional life.
